Portuguese crews choose between the national mapping agency's network, commercial network RTK, crowd-sourced base stations, satellite-delivered corrections and their own base.
| Type | Typical operator | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| National reference network | The national mapping agency, streaming RTK corrections to registered users. | Coverage near your sites, the frame it delivers, whether an availability commitment is published, and support hours. |
| Commercial network RTK | A private provider with stations across Portugal and beyond. | How many correction sources serve your area, the published service level and its remedy, the term, and whether a trial is offered. |
| Crowd-sourced network | Independent owners hosting single base stations. | Distance to the nearest base, station uptime, and how each base was surveyed. |
| Satellite or state-space (PPP-RTK, SSR) | A provider broadcasting an error model without a local base. | Convergence time, accuracy and vertical performance. |
| Your own base | Your crew, on a surveyed point. | The survey of the base point, range, and the time spent setting it up and guarding it. |
RTK Premium delivers ETRS89 (ETRF2000, epoch 2010.0), with ellipsoidal heights. Mainland Portugal uses PT-TM06/ETRS89, a Transverse Mercator projection of ETRS89, so apply it in your controller or office software, and convert ellipsoidal heights to orthometric heights on the Cascais datum with the national geoid model, GeodPT08. Older Datum 73 and Datum Lisboa data convert more accurately with the national mapping agency's NTv2 grids than with a parameter transformation. The Azores and Madeira use their own system, PTRA08-UTM/ITRF93, with local height datums. Measure a known control point before relying on the results.
Farmland: Permanent crops such as vineyards, olive groves and citrus orchards covered 9.9% of Portugal's land area in 2023, and 71.1% of Portuguese farms were smaller than 5 hectares. Planting, spraying and harvesting between rows need positions that repeat season after season. (Eurostat, 2023)
Olive groves: Portugal had 380,779 hectares of olive groves in 2024, and the Alqueva irrigation scheme watered 76,728 hectares of olives in 2025. Hedgerow planting, drip lines and mechanical harvesting in those groves run on centimetre guidance. (EDIA, Alqueva Agricultural Yearbook, 2025)
Rail: Portugal's rail network had 2,527 km in operation in 2024, and about 1,790 km of it was electrified. Track renewals, new lines and electrification works are set out against design to the centimetre. (AMT, Mobility and Transport Authority, 2024)
Ports: Mainland Portugal's commercial ports handled 82 million tonnes of cargo in 2025, and the largest of them handled 42.1 million tonnes. Quay works, dredging and terminal layout are set out from surveyed control. (AMT, Mobility and Transport Authority, 2025)
Energy: Portugal's installed generating capacity reached 23,800 MW at the end of 2025, including 5,444 MW of wind, and the transmission grid ran to 9,895 km. Wind farms, solar plants and line routes are laid out from surveyed points. (REN, Technical Data, 2025)
RTK Premium serves mainland Portugal with network RTK in ETRS89, while the Azores and Madeira have no RTK Premium network today. The coverage map shows the networks at any site.
The national mapping agency runs a public network that streams RTK corrections to registered users, in ETRS89 on the mainland. Community networks host free single base stations of varying quality, so check what each source commits to on availability and support.
On the mainland, use ETRS89, then project to PT-TM06/ETRS89 and convert to heights on the Cascais datum with GeodPT08.
No. Network RTK builds the correction for your position from the surrounding stations, so there is no base to set up, survey or guard.
Prices depend on the number of devices, the term and the product, and we quote them after a short call. The 14-day trial needs no payment.
In a fixed solution under good conditions, RTK Premium reaches under 1.5 cm horizontally and 2.5 cm vertically.
