Austrian crews choose between the national mapping agency's positioning service, commercial network RTK, crowd-sourced base stations, satellite-delivered corrections and their own base.
| Type | Typical operator | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| National positioning service | The national mapping agency; real-time corrections are charged by the second, day or month, and have been free for agricultural and forestry use since February 2021. | The terms for your sector, coverage near your sites, whether an availability commitment is published, and support hours. |
| Commercial network RTK | A private provider with stations across Austria and beyond. | How many correction sources serve your area, the published service level and its remedy, the term, and whether a trial is offered. |
| Crowd-sourced network | Independent owners hosting single base stations. | Distance to the nearest base, station uptime, and how each base was surveyed. |
| Satellite or state-space (PPP-RTK, SSR) | A provider broadcasting an error model without a local base. | Convergence time, accuracy and vertical performance. |
| Your own base | Your crew, on a surveyed point. | The survey of the base point, range, and the time spent setting it up and guarding it. |
RTK Premium delivers ETRS89 (ETRF2000, epoch 2010.0), with ellipsoidal heights. Austrian cadastral and survey data use MGI with the Gauss-Krüger zones M28, M31 and M34, so transform ETRS89 to MGI with the national mapping agency's grid (GIS-Grid) rather than a seven-parameter transformation, and convert ellipsoidal heights to Austrian heights (GHA) with its height grid and geoid. ETRS89/UTM in zone 32 or 33 is also in use. Check against a national control point before cadastral or control work.
Farms: Austria had 101,036 agricultural holdings in 2023. Mowing, spraying and auto-steer on that land depend on a correction that holds pass after pass. (Statistics Austria, 2023)
Motorways: Austria's major road network of motorways and expressways was 2,255 km long at the end of 2025. Widening, tunnel portals and resurfacing on that network are staked and checked against design. (Statistics Austria, 2025)
Rail: The Austrian rail network had an operating length of 5,659 km at the end of 2025. Track renewals and clearance checks are measured against design to the centimetre. (Statistics Austria, 2025)
Forestry: Forest covers more than four million hectares, 47.9% of Austria's territory, according to the national forest inventory for 2016 to 2021. Forest roads and boundary surveys on that land are set out from surveyed points. (Austrian Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, 2022)
Danube: 350 km of the Danube, almost an eighth of its entire course, lie within Austria. Bank protection, lock works and riverside construction are set out from surveyed control. (Statistics Austria, Austria. Data. Figures. Facts, 2025)
RTK Premium serves Austria with network RTK in ETRS89, and the coverage map shows the networks at any site.
The national mapping agency's positioning service charges for real-time corrections, and since February 2021 it has been free for agricultural and forestry use. Community networks host free single base stations of varying quality, so check what each source commits to on availability and support.
Use ETRS89, then transform to MGI and the Gauss-Krüger zone for your site, M28, M31 or M34, with the national grid, and convert to GHA heights with the national height grid and geoid.
Steep valley sides hide part of the sky, so fewer satellites are in view and a fix takes longer to come and is easier to lose. Measure from open ground where you can, and check a known point after any drop.
Prices depend on the number of devices, the term and the product, and we quote them after a short call. The 14-day trial needs no payment.
